Skagit Valley Artist Depicts Local Agriculture

Artist: Alfred Currier
Alfred Currier is noted for his use of brilliant color and texture, as well as his focus on the figure. His vibrant impasto oil paintings often depict his travels as well as the Skagit Valley region where he lives. In 2005 Currier was the featured artist for Bulb Art Holland, an organization that represents the bulb industry in the Netherlands.
"The Skagit Valley is an artist’s paradise, rich with subtle hues of color. From the low land tidal flats to the up-river region, it offers some of the most diverse landscapes in the country coupled with a quality of life." Currier, said.
Marquand Books in association with the University of Washington Press published a book in 2003, "Alfred Currier: Impasto" by Ted Lindberg. Currier dedicated his book to the Hispanic migrant worker and donated a portion of the proceeds to a family support center outreach program which helps migrant workers and their families. Primarily of Hispanic heritage, the migrant workers of Washington's Skagit Valley come from as far away as Central America, Mexico, Texas, and California. Most are a proletariat group of workers who are trying to survive in this fast-paced and competitive agricultural industry. We appreciate the migrant workers not only for the role they serve in agribusiness but also for the warmth and cultural insights they share with our communities. In his work, Alfred sees the migrant farm workers as literally and figuratively plugged into the earth. Alfred Currier's Skagit Valley paintings are a celebration to the migrant farm workers.
